When a business stops growing, people usually look for the cause in the market, the product or the price. Often the real limit is closer to home. A company can only grow as far as its leaders are ready to take it.
Growth multiplies whatever is already there
When a business grows, everything gets bigger: the good habits and the bad ones. A strong manager with a clear standard turns one good location into five. A weak one turns one problem into five. That is why we think about leadership before we think about expansion.
Leaders are built, not found
It is tempting to believe great leaders can simply be hired. Sometimes they can. But in our experience the most reliable leaders are developed inside the business. They know the customers, the team and the work. What they need is a clear path, real responsibility and someone who invests time in them.
This is the core of what our recruiting team does: finding people with drive, setting them up with strong training and giving them room to lead. The results show up not in one big moment, but in teams that run well when no one is watching.
What strong leaders do
The best leaders we have worked with share a few traits:
- They set a clear standard and hold it consistently, including for themselves.
- They stay close to the work. They know what their team faces because they have seen it.
- They develop the next leader. They measure success partly by who can replace them.
- They stay calm under pressure. A team takes its temperature from the person leading it.
- They tell the truth, especially when the news is bad.
What this means for investing
When Alajnaf Inc. evaluates a business, we spend as much time on its people as on its numbers. Who makes the decisions? Who would step up if they left? Is there a bench of future leaders, or just one person holding everything together?
A business with strong leadership and average numbers is often a better investment than one with strong numbers and weak leadership. Numbers follow people.
Investing in leaders
At Alajnaf Inc., supporting leadership is part of how we partner. That can mean helping build a training program, clarifying roles, or simply being a steady sounding board for the people running the business.
Growth that lasts is built one leader at a time. It takes patience, and it is worth every bit of it.
